Pityriasis versicolor is a chronic fungal skin disease. The fungus is present on the surface of the skin of most people and, under the influence of certain circumstances, can multiply rapidly and cause a pathological process.
The provoking circumstances include:
immunodeficiency states;
pathology from the internal organs;
excessive sweating;
living in conditions of high air humidity;
disorders of the hormonal system.
Most typical for this pathology is the defeat of the upper body: face, neck, chest and back. Mostly males suffer from it.
Symptoms
The main symptom in the manifestation of pityriasis lichen is the appearance on the surface of the skin of asymmetrically located rounded spots with clear boundaries. They can vary in size and tend to grow as the disease progresses. At the later stages of pathology, fusion is characteristic of the foci.
The color of such spots is very different and can vary from whitish to pink-red. Layers of small scales are visible on the surface. The skin in these places becomes denser and changes its structure. The lesions are not characterized by itching or other unpleasant sensations. They are not sunburned by UV light and may fade on their own over time.
Diagnostics
Diagnosis of this pathology is carried out by a dermatovenerologist and is based on the data of an objective examination and additional research methods. Most often, the Balser iodine test is used to clarify the diagnosis. The bottom line is staining the spots with a 2% iodine solution, under the influence of which the pityriasis lichen foci are stained. The method with Wood's ultraviolet lamp is also used.
An additional examination for the presence of fungi in the layers of the skin is possible.
Treatment
At the initial stages of the disease, it is possible to limit ourselves to only external treatment. For this, antifungal ointments, keratolytic agents for an exfoliating effect are used.
If the lichen has passed into a common form, then antimycotic drugs are prescribed for oral administration.
Prophylaxis
Important preventive measures for pityriasis versicolor are as follows:
avoidance of stress;
balanced nutrition, provided with vitamins;
avoiding the use of clothing, the material of which can be irritating;
For people with increased sweating, it is recommended to wipe the skin with water containing a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice.
